Aladdin's Cave | Belly Dance Music | Music Workshops | MARY ELLEN DONALD
Ref: MEDGCD1
Quantity:
In March 2006 I was priveledged to meet a very special lady. Mary-Ellen Donald is a seminal figure in the Belly Dance Music scene. She has been teaching drumming since the late 1970s, and she has a remarkable highly developed sensitivity to music that may be partially attributed to her being blind. She is also known by many as the "Guru of finger cymbal playing" and is outstanding on the tambourine. Despite being appointed to the faculty of music at San Francisco State University to teach Middle Eastern Percussion Mary-Ellen's thirst for knowledge is unabated and she is still taking lessons, and "learning from her students" Since the 1970s she has performed extensively at concerts, on numerous recordings, and also on the soundtrack of several episodes of ABC-TV series, the Young Indiana Jones. I was thrilled to see this lovely lady's face light up as she took the stage in San Francisco, playing her drums as she lives her life, with joy in her heart. Edwin.Gems of the Middle East CD's feature the late Mimi Spencer on qanun (zither) and voice, and Mary Ellen Donald on doumbec and tambourine. An often recorded instrumentalist, Mimi Spencer made her singing debut as a recorded vocalist in the Gems series, singing in five Middle Eastern languages. The Gems CD's reflect the rich musical partnership that had developed between Mimi and Mary Ellen as they performed together for over 20 years. Each CD contains 15 pieces with an ample supply of entrance pieces, slow pieces, drum solos, tip music, and finale music. The drum solos are hot, uniquely constructed, very danceable, and a perfect length with deep resonant sounds of the djembe bringing to them an African flavor. "This is the best recording of Middle Eastern music I've ever heard, so balanced and clear." - Abdallah Kdouh, oudist and singer. "Great; that's how the tambourine ought to sound on a recording." - Tony Lammam, drummer and tambourinist.CD Volume I, Tracks:1. Saba Samir; 2:40 2. Lailet Hob; 6:17 3. Hebbina; 3:34 4.
